Insurance organisations today are no more effective at delivering on large-scale data management initiatives than they were 10 years ago. In a recent survey, 70% of the companies said their data management initiatives did not deliver the expected results. That success rate was unchanged from similar surveys conducted in the 1990's. And the environment for data management is only getting more complex.....

| 10 ways to ensure a successful data migration - part 3 of 3 |

Over the past couple of weeks I have given my thoughts on ways to ensuring a successful migration of data. Now here are the concluding steps…
8 Set Policies and Procedures
Most data migration projects have proscribed time windows for the actual
moving of the data. It is critical that the code components have
acceptable levels of performance, so it is important to conduct proper
testing before rolling out a production deployment. In today’s
environment, when IT is wholly integrated into the operations of the
business, you need to be sure that the data has been migrated properly
and the systems are actually running as you expected. Test the migrated
data to make sure it is in the right format and that it is accurate and
consistent. If you don’t test and validate the migrated data
andcompare it to the original data, how will you be confident in its
integrity? One of the biggest fears of data migration is that processes
and procedures thatwork in the current system will not work in the new
one. With proper testing prior to the production deployment, you can
eliminate that risk.
10 Remember
It’s Not Over Till It’s Over: Even after the data migration process has been successfully completed, there will be still more work to do to ensure that the transition has been smooth. IT will need to conduct data verification and validation tests at the storage, operating systems, database and applications levels. You will also want to make sure the policies and procedures are adequate and en-forceable. Managing the process through the conclusion is also important for compliance purposes, which might require you to document the data migration process with a clear audit trail. Finally, we’ll cheat a little here and give you: Step 11 which is this: Think of the future: As with all IT initiatives, it’s important to be flexible: solicit feedback from stakeholders and see if they experienced any pain points during the process and if they have any insight on the policies and procedures that have been put in place. It’s important to learn as much as possible from each data migration initiative: given the changes that are taking place in IT these days, the next data migration effort is probably just around the corner. |
