The annual cost of metal theft to UK businesses is about £770m ($1.19bn) a year, a level that is unsustainable, according to UK-based composite Aviva, which said that some insurance claims were exceeding £1m. Aviva commercial property senior underwriter David Townsend said that metal theft was now a problem for empty buildings on a par with arson. The fact that there was no specific geographic area or type of property targeted made it very difficult to police. Mr Townsend said that unoccupied properties were particularly at risk, although short-term unoccupied properties were as much at risk as those unoccupied in the long term.
