The Axis Insurance Co unit of Bermudian re/insurer Axis Capital Holdings has agreed to underwrite hurricane cover for homeowners' insurance customers of Hawaiian agency group First Insurance Co of Hawaii, Hawaii insurance commissioner JP Schmidt said yesterday. Axis will write hurricane cover for First Insurance's new customers as well as for the 13,000 policies that come up for renewal over the next year. As First Insurance's hurricane risk underwriter, Axis replaces Argo Group US, which had filled that role for the last two years. Argo "gave us lengthy notice" that they were to reallocate capital and leave the Hawaiian market, said First Insurance vice-president Steve Tabussi. First Insurance will continue to write the primary homeowners and dwelling fire cover, and will service the primary policy and the AXIS storm policy. The company, co-owned by US commercial p/c group CNA Financial and Japan's Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, includes 28 independent Hawaiian agencies.
