Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway's roughly $30m liability if France won the World Cup disappeared yesterday after France lost to South Africa, thus failing to qualify for the next round. Warren Buffett had revealed the liability in a CNBC interview at the beginning of March (IIN 24, March 2 2010). Ajit Jain underwrote the policy through Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group (BHRG), the company's unit for large and bespoke reinsurance deals. Although the counterparty was not named, many thought that it was likely to be French retailer Carrefour, which promised to refund the cost of newly purchased flat screen TVs if France won the tournament, or half the cost if France got to the final, but lost.
