The European Commission has cleared the Belgian government to inject €1.5bn ($1.87bn) into locally based Ethias, a consortium of four local insurers and assurers. Ethias in return will undergo a major restructuring in an attempt to return to profitability. It will look to sell off its retail life operation and possibly all of its stake in French-Belgian financial services group Dexia, which would force Ethias to realize a significant cash loss. Ethias said yesterday that it would have to sell "a considerable part" of its 5.04% stake, and that it would have to do so over the next couple of years. Besides selling that stake, Ethias is required to cut 38% of its consolidated balance sheet by 2013,compared to 2008. Ethias was one of the casualties of the turmoil caused by the collapse of Lehman Bros.
