| FRENCH INSURANCE SECTOR SHRINKS BY 9% IN 2011 |
| Industry News | |

|
The French insurance sector contracted by 9% in 2011, according to preliminary figures from the Fédération Française des Sociétés d'Assurances (FFSA). Total turnover declined to €189.6bn in 2011, from €207.2bn in 2010. The drop was mainly driven by a fall in life assurance premiums – down 14% year on year to €141.6bn – as consumers shifted into either liquid savings or property. In 2010 Life policies accounted for 70% of French household savings. In 2011 this dropped to 40%. Outflows exceeded inflows every month after August 2011. On the non-life side income rose by 4% to €48bn, driven mainly by increases in rates. Claims were down by 5% year on year, although there were difficulties in some sectors, such as home insurance, where burglaries were on the rise.
