| MELBOURNE STORM HITS SUNCORP FOR AUD200M-PLUS |
| Industry News | |
| Wednesday, 11 January 2012 | |
|
The hailstorm that struck Melbourne on December 25 2011is expected to cost Australian insurer Suncorp between AUD200m and AUD250m ($204m to $255m), the company said last week, noting that reinsurance arrangements would cap the loss at AUD250m. Suncorp said that it had already received about 28,000 claims across personal and commercial lines, of which two-thirds were for damage to vehicles and the remainder for damage to property. An earthquake that struck Christchurch, New Zealand on December 23 2011 is expected to cost Suncorp AUD10m to AUD20m. The insurer observed that because both events occurred over the Christmas holiday period there had been a slower-than-normal lodging of claims and assessment of those claims. However, Suncorp now thinks that its natural catastrophe costs for the six months to December 31 2011 will be between AUD360m and AUD420m, compared with a previous natural hazard allowance of AUD240m. Suncorp's shares were off by 3.2% at the close of Friday business.
