| NUMBER OF CLAIMS FROM MELBOURNE STORMS EXCEEDS THOSE FOR QUEENSLAND FLOODS |
| Industry News | |

|
Insurer members of the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) have reported 77,000 claims totalling AUD550m ($565m) as a result of the hailstorm that struck the northern suburbs of Melbourne around December 25 2011, exceeding the number of claims received after the high-profile floods that struck Queensland at the very beginning of the year. The total insured cost is expected to rise further. At an insured cost of AUD2.4bn, the total for the Queensland floods remains higher, but this loss came from 70,000 claims. There were also about 70,000 claims as a result of cyclone Yasi, which struck Queensland at around the same time. A significant majority of the early claims as a result of the hailstorm was for damage to vehicles, but this has now fallen back to 56% motor and 44% residential/commercial/business interruption. The storms and floods that hit Victoria earlier in 2011 cost an estimated AUD534m.
