| PERILS PUTS WINDSTORM JOACHIM INSURED LOSSES AT €300M |
| Industry News | |
| Wednesday, 01 February 2012 | |
|
The insurance industry will see losses of about €300m ($393m) as a result of windstorm Joachim, which struck parts of France, Switzerland and Germany between December 15 and December 17 2011, reports Zurich-based European loss aggregator Perils. Most of the damage caused was in France. The estimate does not include any losses indemnified by the French CatNat government scheme. Europe suffered eight windstorms within a month at the back-endof last year, but Joachim is the first officially to reach Peril's loss-reporting threshold of €200m. Windstorms Xaver, Yoda and Friedhelm did not reach the threshold, Perils confirmed last week. It will make a later announcement on windstorms Patrick (aka Dagmar), Ulli and Andrea. The last is almost certain to reach the loss-reporting trigger, with insured costs in Germany alone estimated at between €200m and €400m. Joachim took a more southerly path than the other storms and was the only one to cause significant damage to France. Artemis noted that catastrophe bonds Atlas VI (Scor), Queen Street IV (Munich Re) and Tramline Re (Amlin) could see Joachim as a "qualifying event".
