| S&P DOWNGRADES GENERALI AND CNP AS EUROZONE FALLOUT CONTINUES |

Rating agency Standard & Poor's has downgraded Italian Insurer Generali to 'A' and French insurer CNP Assurances to 'A+'. It has also revised its outlooks on Germany's Allianz and France's Axa to negative, while affirming their existing ratings of 'AA' and 'AA-' respectively. The downgrade of Generali reflected what S&P described as "weakened capital adequacy", which it said was likely to remain no better than "good" for the next couple of years. At CNP, said S&P, the financial markets had "damaged the company's ability to restore strong capital adequacy for the next two years". S&P noted that "financial market developments and increased credit risk in the eurozone ... were the key drivers in the downgrades".
