| Industry News | |
| Wednesday, 25 January 2012 | |
|
A severe connective storm in the south-eastern US brought tornadoes, hailstorms and strong winds to Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia. Risk modeller Eqecat said that 21 tornado events were reported on Sunday in the states of Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama, with two more reported on Monday. However, Eqecat felt that insured losses should remain below $100m. Although late January is "early" for what is considered the tornado season in the south-eastern US, Eqecat noted that a comparison of 212 tornado activity to date was above average, but well below historic maximums. Meanwhile, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has declared a state of emergency for all of the state's 67 counties following the severe weather, which killed at least two people and injured more than 100.
