| TRAVELERS' 2011 INCOME FALLS 56% ON CAT LOSSES |

US-based Travelers has closed 2011 with net income of $1.43bn, down 56% year on year. Pre-tax catastrophe losses rose to $2.56bn from $1.11bn, while favourable prior-year reserve development declined by 43% to $715m. The group recorded an underwriting loss of $1.27bn, down from income of $1.33bn in 2010. The combined ratio jumped 11.9 points to 105.1% while net written premiums rose 3% to $22.19bn. Its core business insurance segment saw operating income fall 41% to $1.35bn, while its financial, professional & international insurance segment posted a 4.4% increase in operating income to $647m. Its personal lines segment swung to an operating loss of $332m from income of $440m. With recently introduced rate hikes, Travelers expects improved profitability in 2012.
